Screen Shot 2016-05-03 at 5.21.27 PMOften called “The World’s Safest Speedster,” Jenkins is most famous for setting the land-speed record in 1935 at the Bonneville Salt Flats outside Salt Lake City. Driving a Duesenberg nicknamed the Mormon Meteor, Jenkins reached the impressive speed of 135 mph. He died August 9, 1956 of a heart attack. Many people today still consider him the father of salt racing.
